I Metalwings sono una band bulgara nata nel 2010 da Stela Atanasova con l’intento di creare un mix tra metal, musica classica e cantato operistico femminile. In questo mare stiamo nuotando, per cui genere della band metal sinfonico. In questi anni il combo ha fatto una importante gavetta live, calcando anche palchi di una certa elevatura. I risultati si vedono nel 2015 con il video del brano Crying of the Sun, che vanta migliaia di visite sul sito in youtube. Questo che recensiamo è l’ep che anticiperà il disco in uscita a marzo 2018. Tecnicamente la band e’ molto preparata e nessuna nota è a caso, anzi tutto e’ rigorosamente “come deve essere”. La bella voce lirica di Stela è in primo piano sulla ricamata e ricercata base sonora eseguita dagli strumenti. I brani non sono immediati ed entrano in testa dopo ripetuti ascolti, per cui per apprezzare la bravura e l’intento della band occorre dare a loro tempo a disposizione. Le cinque canzoni che compongono il lavoro sono bei pezzi, ma rischiano di annoiare se l’ascoltatore non “regala” il tempo necessario per innamorarsi. Non si lesina sui mezzi, violini, orchestre, duetti di voci, cori, nulla e’ lasciato al caso pur di “riempire”… I brani sono in linea con le produzioni di epica, edenbridge, delain e altre band del genere. Consigliati agli amanti del gothic che troveranno nei Metalwings dei loro nuovi paladini.

What should labels/zines/promoters know about your band? Why should they be interested in it?
Stela Atanasova: I believe that some of the biggest labels know for Metalwings already. We’ve managed to draw attention to over 11 million musical fans on YouTube with our song “Crying of the Sun” without any support from labels and promoters. So I think that they should be interested by our band because people from all over the world like our Music and want to hear us live. We bring the world a piece of forgotten beauty.
What plans do you have for the near future as a band?
Stela Atanasova: In the end of March 2018 we have plans to release our full length album called “For all beyond”. In this album we’ll present 9 masterly composed songs, including one acoustic song in Bulgarian language. The album will also include the song Fallen Angel in the Hell as a bonus track in a new arrangement; Fallen Angel in the Hell (Instrumental version) and For All Beyond (Instrumental version). The male vocals parts in the album For All Beyond will be performed by Max Morton. The album will be mixed and mastered by Max Morton at Morton Studio.
Why should a metalhead buy your demos/albums?
Nikola Ivanov (Blackie): A metalhead should have our album because our songs combine lots of the elements of symphonic metal music and not only. Every our song is so different and unique and gives to your senses all the aspects of Music that you need to hear.

‘Fallen Angel In The Hell’ is het vijf tracks tellend debuut van Metalwings, een Bulgaarse band die een mix brengt van klassieke elementen en melodic metal die we kunnen onderbrengen in het vakje “symphonic power metal met female operatic vocals”. Een hele mond vol maar die dekt best wel de lading. De band werd in 2010 opgestart door vocaliste Stela Atanasova en kende al vrij vlug successen in eigen land, alwaar de band een graag geziene gast is op tal van festivals. Een video voor ‘Crying In The Sun’ zag het levenslicht in 2015 en werd door duizenden bekeken op het wereldwijde web. En in 2016 werd deze ep, die nu pas MUSIKA bereikt, op de markt gebracht. Je krijgt mooi opgebouwde nummers waar elementen uit klassieke muziek, power metal en folk worden samengebracht tot een geheel met in de spotlight op de kristalheldere mooie stem van Stela. Dit betekent echter niet dat andere instrumenten hun deel niet opeisen. Zo komen melodieuze gitaarsolo’s aan bod, hoor je op tijd en stond een fluit in de sound doorklinken, krijgt ook piano nu en dan zijn plaatsje in de zon en mag ook een elektrische viola zijn aandeel in de spotlight opeisen. Het zorgt in ieder geval voor een mooie totaalsound die rond de, vrij breekbaar klinkende, vocalen van Stela wordt opgebouwd. Liefhebbers van symphonic melodic metal zullen dit best kunnen smaken, “die hard” fanaten van extreme metal, death metal en / of black metal lopen hier best in een heel wijde boog omheen. We willen ook nog meegeven dat eind maart een eerste full-album, ‘For All Beyond’, zou worden uitgebracht. Wij beschouwen deze vijf tracks tellende ep alvast als een mooi visitekaartje van Metalwings die best wel naar meer smaakt, al mag het toch iets krachtiger klinken.

Jetzt ist es also soweit: Für Ende März 2018 ist die Veröffentlichung des Debütalbums „For All Beyond“ der bulgarischen Band Metalwings geplant. Die Aussichten sind die besten, denn tatsächlich hörte sich die 2016 erschienene EP „Fallen Angel in the Hell“ schon sehr erfahren an, technisch und musikalisch, vor allem dank der langjährigen Tätigkeit der Gruppe, die seit 2010 insbesondere in Liveshows sehr aktiv ist, und der Professionalität der Sängerin Stela Atanasova.
Metalwings spielen ein sauberes, klassisches Symphonic-Metal, das teilweise an Epic- und Folk-Metal grenzt, ohne seine innerliche Kohärenz zu verlieren. Die klare, bezaubernde Kristallstimme der Frontfrau tanzt mit den melodischen, akuten Noten des Keyboards, der Geige und der Flöte auf der Tanzfläche des tiefen, dunklen, klassischen Metal-Hintergrunds. Aus dem Kontrast entsteht die typische Harmonie des Symphonic-Metals. Die steigende Spannung im Rhythmus der Lieder, vom Anfang bis zum Ende, bildet eine Art „musikalisches Klimax“, die in eine magische Atmosphäre führt.

This Metalwings with “Fallen Angel in the Hell” fulfills satisfactorily the classical part with a bonus. And the bonus is vocalist Stela Atanasova. I have written here many times that I just love female voices in Metal. The point is the contrast between female voices with distorted guitars is a killer. Female voices and Metal sonance are a perfect marriage. Not to mention the beauty of Stela Atanasova’s voice. Take a song like “Immortal Metal Wings” for instance. The combination between the hard and rispid guitars and the whispering and absolutely correct voice does magic. Life is made of contradictions so says the master Engels. Metalwings are a band full of them. I only regret the fact the guitar is a bit shy on solos.

Knackig addierte, souverän gespielte Rock-Nuancen sorgen dabei ebenfalls für ausgiebigen Hörgenuss.

Stela Atanasova: First of all, a perfect song has to combine lots of structural elements. It has to use beautiful vocal lines, complex harmony structure, unusual chords sequence, mystic lyrics, lots of backing vocals, different parts with tempo changes and changes in measures, interesting guitar riffs and complex drums. The perfect song to me is the one which makes you cry and laugh at the same time – it has to touch your heart and fill your sensitivity with all the desirable aspects of the human soul.
